Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We started planting evergreen trees in 1980 so we have been in business for 36 years. We are the oldest and largest Christmas tree farm in Loudoun county.
What is your primary product or service?
Christmas trees (firs and spruces) and wreaths
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
In 1978 my wife and I decided we wanted to live on a farm and even at that time the only crop that looked like it might be financially sustainable in the long run was Christmas trees. It turns out that is still true. We looked at cattle, soy beans, corn, pumpkins, lambs, wine and grapes you name it. None of these agricultural practices are sustainable in Virginia at present. You lose money on them until it is too painful to continue.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Service, service, service. We give the clients the run of our farm when we are open. They may cut any tree they want. When they need us, we are there for them.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location and we have no plans to expand beyond our present location.
Provide detailed directions to your location
From Middleburg, VA go north on Foxcroft Road until it ends. Turn right on Unison Road. After one tenth of a mile, turn left on Christmas Tree Lane.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash or check. No plastic
Which areas do you service?
People come from all over, but primarily from the suburbs of Northern Virginia.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
My wife and I own the farm and we employ a farm manager for day-to-day operations
What are your hours of operation?
Weekends after Thanksgiving from 9 AM to 5 PM
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
We had an extraordinarily wonderful experience at your farm getting our tree.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"Dear Lord, thank you for sacrificing your only son to make our industry possibly." An actual quote of the opening words of the convocation given by the President of the Maryland Christmas Tree Association (MCTA) on February 23, 1980 at 9 AM in the Auditorium of Hagerstown Junior College when opening the Winter Meeting of the MCTA. I was there and so was my wife, because otherwise I would question my own memory.
